Rapper Drakeo the Ruler Dies After Stabbing Backstage at Los Angeles Festival

Rapper Drakeo the Ruler from Los Angeles was stabbed backstage at a concert on Saturday, unnamed sources told Los Angeles Times. He was set to perform at the day-long Once Upon a Time in LA festival at Banc of California Stadium. The 28-year-old man, named Darrell Caldwell, was reported to be in critical condition, and on Sunday, Guardians reported that he died of his wounds.

Although the details remained hazy on Sunday, Times The report said that the performer was “attacked by a group of people” and then taken to a nearby hospital. A source described to the newspaper a video filmed after the incident, which depicts “people running up to the stage and security trying to break up a scuffle.” (Online, one can find out-of-context videos, which we won’t share here.)

Once upon a time in LA, a spinoff of Once Upon a Time in the LBC festival from 2019, featured three stages with old plays like The Isley Brothers, George Clinton, WAR and Delfonics, young stars like Caldwell and Bluefaceand huge names including Snoop Dogg, 50 Cents, and Ice Cube.

The incident happened around 8:40pm. Caldwell is scheduled to perform on the third stage at 8:30pm. It is not yet clear exactly when, the event was closed. Although Snoop Dogg was scheduled to start at 8:30 p.m. on the main stage, his show was delayed and he didn’t perform.

Caldwell, who released his first studio album this February, received rave reviews for his June 2020 mixtape. Thank you for using GTL, was recorded over the phone while he was in custody. Pitchfork called it “A remarkable achievement” and “possibly the greatest rap album ever recorded from prison.”

Fans and colleagues took to social media when they heard the news.
