Butch Hartman, creator of beloved Nickelodeon properties like The Fairly OddParents and Danny Phantom, shares Sephiroth’s original artwork.
Final Fantasy 7 features one of the most iconic villains in gaming history. Sephiroth, the game’s main antagonist, is emblematic of the challenging gameplay and complex story that defines Final Fantasy 7.
Hartman is best known for producing the hit series on Nickelodeon, such as Danny phantom and Parents are pretty weird. Sometimes, creators will take to social media to post artwork of characters from other popular properties. Now, Sephiroth is in the final stages of this treatment, with Hartman sharing a video of him drawing the famous villain.
Sephiroth looks interesting in Hartman’s cartoonish style, with his mischievous smirk and slanted look. His sharp, angular facial lines are still very much present, in stark contrast to the rounded designs of the Hartman brand characters. Of particular note is the character’s hair, which is still larger than life; the large bangs that surround his face are featured part of his design, which Hartman was interested in simulating. He wears his standard attire in Hartman’s artwork, complete with cauldrons and leather slings, which are also important aspects of his appearance.
Although Hartman’s work paints Sephiroth in a less intimidating light, this work is no less impressive. His single wing is still intact, which Hartman drew is a bit softer than his original iteration. The shadows cover the highlight in either corner his nature is a villain, creating a sinister impression.
Much of the video Hartman shares is a walkthrough of his finished work, showing the painstaking process of creating the product line and adding in small details, as well as tracing his work in ink. . It makes Sephiroth’s final reveal in his entirety much more satisfying, clearly communicating the work required to create even cartoon-like works like Hartman’s.
While Hartman’s caricature art style seems to clash with Final Fantasy’s More practical design, the section occupies an easy intermediate between the two. In this re-imagining, it’s hard to envision Sephiroth becoming as evil as his original incarnation, but it still portrays his role as a villain. Most importantly, unmistakably Sephiroth; No matter how drastic the change in artistic direction, he remains recognizable to fans, who leave nothing but praiseworthy comments in the comments section of the video. Artwork like Hartman’s leaves room for other artists regenerative Final Fantasy characters in new ways will definitely be a hit for those who enjoy the series.
