Following the release of the PlayStation 5 in November 2020, many Sony fans praised the console’s next-gen capabilities. The new DualSense controller has been the focus of attention for many gamers as it introduces features like haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, offering gamers a brand new experience. While that was there, there were also calls for improvements in several different departments of the console.
As Sony continues to strive to deliver the best gaming experience possible, fans continue to share their own feedback and thoughts on the changes needed to bring the console to its full potential.
8th Themes and interactivity on the home screen
Since the launch of the console, themes and custom backgrounds are not an option for owners, only the backgrounds of the selected games. Given the previous two generations of PlayStation 3 and 4, fans would have expected these features to be a requirement.
Themes also came in portions with their own menu sound effects and music, but as things stand the default remains. Sony hasn’t commented yet on why this feature isn’t available, but PS5 owners will keep hoping for possible changes in terms of custom features.
7 Discord streaming feature
Since Sony had announced a partnership that will see Discord integrated into the PS5, fans will be aware of the potential of Discord’s streaming services available on PC on its servers. Features like Discord Nitro allow users to stream at 1080p video quality up to 60 frames per second, similar to the PS5 when streaming to platforms like YouTube.
The launch of this service gives players the ability to connect with friends who may not own the console, or even branch out to different servers based on their tastes. If Sony is able to fulfill this special service as part of its deal with Discord, it will surely give fans another advantage when using the console.
6 Faster CV
When you look at features like fast loading times and allowing players to pick up right where they left off, Quick Resume is a tool that allows players to do just that. Unfortunately for PlayStation owners, this is only available on Microsoft’s next-gen Xbox Series X and S consoles.
Many fans will know how useful this is, as it introduces flexibility and the safety net of switching apps without worrying about losing progress. Given the power of the console, it’s very possible for Sony to implement this in upcoming updates.
5 Make initial boot permanent
During the first launch of the console for new owners, a special animation would appear for a few seconds before prompting the player to plug in their controller. Fans will be familiar with the iconic PS1, PS2 and PS3 launch animations.
It would be beneficial to keep that animation, or at least give owners the ability to toggle the matter on or off, while also giving the current generation of PlayStation a historical feature.
4 Ability to play music over each game
In certain games such as The Last of Us Part 2, the PS5 prevents the player from playing their own music, be it via Spotify or via the media player. Fans who have completed games as such and want to run faster or would rather play something than their game activities may find this frustrating.
Whether it’s up to the developers or Sony itself, a change would be needed here that gives the owners free choice and receives a further addition in the aspect of accessibility.
3 Dedicated internet browsing application
Unlike the PS4, the new console currently does without the possibility of surfing the Internet via a dedicated application. The user must set the settings in the user manual to display the default browser for surfing the Internet.
Despite this, it is still an unreliable way for owners to access the internet, especially if fans are unfamiliar with the tutorials that allow them to access the browser. The positive sign is that this is actually present on the system, showing that Sony intends to add an application as a feature in a future update that will give users the freedom to browse the web as they please.
1 Improve voice commands
Considering that the voice command feature is still in beta, it’s just inevitable for Sony to improve it. From voice to more recognizable user commands, this tool needs to be overhauled to develop the best possible and most accessible voice command feature.
Not only does this help current owners who may need to rely on such features, but it also encourages those who haven’t already acquired the console to do so as it will meet their needs when needed.
