PlayStation Japan teases PS1 PS2 PS3 backwards compatibility announcement on Twitter

The tweet from PlayStation_Jp reads: “#Kenshi Yonezu x #PlayStation. Kenshi Yonezu has been working on a new commercial for PlayStation. 1-2-3 is the symbol of the PlayStation. Launch on January 23”.

A short video is included in the tweet. Four PlayStation DualShock buttons appear, followed by Kenshi Yonezu’s name in kanji, and finally January 23 is displayed. Note that this date is also written as “123”. This could be another sign that PS1, PS2 and PS3 backwards compatibility is coming to PS5.

Who is Kenshi Yonezu, the singer of the January 23 new PlayStation commercial?

Kenshi Yonezu is a famous singer and music producer in Japan. Hatsune Miku and Vocaloid fans know Kenshi Yonezu as the producer of Vocaloid Hachi.

Yonezu started her career in 2009 by uploading Vocaloid music to the YouTube of Niconico, Japan. He is the composer of famous Hatsune Miku songs like Persona Alice and The end of the world. In 2012, Hachi started singing with his own voice and name and is currently one of the most popular singers in Japan.

Furthermore, Yonezu is an official artist and illustrator, and owns its own brand, called “Reissued“. Further hinting that something related to a classic PlayStation console could be announced in the ad featuring music by Kenshi Yonezu.

Reissue Twitter account also shared same tweet with PlayStation_Jp and confirmed that Kenshi Yonezu created a new song for the ad.

New PlayStation Ads Revealed to Random Players, No Old Compatibility Announcement in Sight Right Now (Update)

Right after the clock struck midnight on January 23rd in Japan, PlayStation Japan on blog explained that Kenshi Yonezu’s ad with a new song, Pop song, will launch on January 24, but randomly selected players can watch the ad right now via their PS4 and PS5. A random player with a Japanese PSN account received a “123 Early Access” message, with a link to the ad.

Japanese game ads usually come in 15 and 30 second versions, Currently, the 30 second version of the ad is not public on YouTube. There’s still hope for PlayStation to announce something along with the public reveal of the ad on Monday, January 24, but that seems like a false alarm at the moment.
