Producer Super Mario Bros. defends Chris Pratt’s controversial acting
Two months after Nintendo shocked game fans by announcing Chris Pratt would star in the Super Mario movie, it continues to be a hot topic.
Just over a year from now until Chris Pratt makes his hot debut as Super Mario, but even before the first preview of the film comes out, its producers are supporting Guardians of the Galaxy star as a more capable plumber.
When Nintendo Announces Full Upcoming Cast Super Mario Bros. movies, the names on the list raised eyebrows and no one did anything more than cast Pratt as the main character instead of Charles Martinet, who had been playing the plumber for 25 years. Most of the criticism towards that decision comes from the fact that many Nintendo fans feel like Pratt cast as Mario is a no-brainer for Martinet’s legacy, as are many of the talented voice actors dedicated to that line of work.
However, one of the key names behind the new one Super Mario Bros. movie jumped to Pratt’s defense. Illumination producer and CEO Chris Meledandri recently commented on a number of reasons why Pratt is the project’s first choice. When asked by TooFab, Meledandri said, “the voice he is making for us, and Mario, is phenomenal.” Meledrani also stated that he is delighted that the fans are finally listen to Pratt’s Mario voice, while also claiming that he gets some of the negativity that comes from being an Italian-American.
According to Meledandri, Charlie Day’s Italian heritage is enough to make Super Mario Bros.‘Standard intentions, though he did warn that people shouldn’t expect Pratt to go full Martinet shouting “It’s a-me, Mario!” As Meledandri explains, this is simply because “It’s not the tenor of the performance throughout the film.” Overall, Meledandri just expressed that he wants people to go see the movie before criticizing it, which is certainly a sensible approach.
As if playing Mario wasn’t a childhood dream for Pratt, he has One Garfield queuing role, which means there really has to be something to like about the actor’s voice talent, especially after his performances in both. LEGO Movies. Finally, Pratt’s star power (not Super Mario kind) is what ultimately brought the boh parts to him, and given Martinet’s history as Mario, it really makes sense to give up his beloved job for a new goal.
After all, Nintendo has got a lot to deal with when it comes to Mario smooth transition from 2D to 3D and now go to the cinema without worrying about attracting people who are not fans of the game to see it. In any case, voice is hardly the biggest obstacle to creating a Mario movies, as arguably translating the game’s simple stories and whimsical humor presents a much greater challenge.
