Eyebrows were raised this weekend when it was quietly leaked that the mortified Prince Andrew would be attending one of the most important ceremonies on the royal calendar, Garter Day, with the blessing of his mother, the Queen.
Andrew, 62, recently paid millions of dollars to Jeffrey Epstein human trafficking victim Virginia Giuffre, who accused Andrew of sexually assaulting her when she was a teenager.
Andrew’s mother had previously said he would lose all royal duties and roles, is fighting the case as a “private citizen” and has reportedly asked him not to use his title “His Royal Highness”.
Hence the shock waves generated by London Sunday times it is easy to imagine that Andrew is referred to as “HRH” in the official record of the ancient ceremony. Garter Day celebrates Britain’s highest order of chivalry, the Order of the Garter, with membership limited to 24 people, including former Prime Ministers.
New clues as to how Andrew managed to secure his attendance at this pivotal ceremonial event can – perhaps – be found in an intriguing account in today’s issue daily mirror by the respected royal correspondent Russell Myers.
Myers reports that Andrew, who lives just five miles from the Queen, visited his mother at Windsor Castle “to make amends every day for his sexual abuse scandal”.
Myers says morning visits are daily and regular, often extending to lunch with his mother.
A source told Myers, “Andrew is doing everything he can to make amends for the shame he has caused his family for being involved in such a scandal. He wants to make it up to the queen, so he does everything to see her as often as possible.
“The rest of the family, apart from Her Majesty, agree that he should stay out of the limelight and remain silent after leaving such a stain on the family.”
Interestingly, Myers reports that Andrew has increased the frequency of his visits after Harry said in an interview with Hoda Kotb that he wanted to make sure Her Majesty had “the right people around him”.
A friend of Andrew’s told that mirror He was “deeply offended” by the comments, adding, “He (Andrew) has paid regular visits to the Queen but she is his mother after all.”
