A deadly jellyfish, the Portuguese Battle of Man o’ War, has been discovered off the coast at a North Carolina beach. According to Wikipedia, “The Portuguese War, also known as the man-war, bluebottle, or floating terror is a marine hydrozoan found in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans.” Its venom is strong enough to kill prey and sometimes even humans. The sting is particularly painful and causes welds in the skin.

What does it look like? The Portuguese Man o’ War has a balloon-like buoy, usually blue, purple, or pink, that floats up to 6 inches above the water. Its long tentacles grow to a medium length 30 sets and can last as long as 100 feet. Some were recently discovered at Carolina Beach prompting officials to fly a purple flag. The purple flag indicates dangerous marine life in the water. In addition to the sightings, several other jellyfish stings were reported to the Carolina Beach Ocean Rescue. If you see a purple flag flying over the beach, be careful and consider staying out of the ocean during this time.

“We had loads of jellyfish and human fights on the beach and a lot of people getting stung, so we went ahead and just raised the purple flag just to let everyone know that there is a sea creature out there. . a danger,” Wallace told WWAY. Thankfully no one has reported being burned by a war man. If you’re planning a trip, look out for this or other deadly jellyfish at Carolina Beach.
