The race for governor of Texas has gotten interesting even though the election is still nearly a year away.
Last week, former Democratic Representative Beto O’Rourke announced a plan to challenge Governor Greg Abbott in 2022.
O’Rourke, who was the 2018 US Senate candidate and 2020 presidential candidate (briefly), was harshly critical of the Republican governor.
Democrats have taken issue with Abbott’s support for strengthening the law election integrity, abortion restriction and allow Texans carry a pistol unlicensed, according to The Texas Tribune. He has also criticized the governor’s responses to the COVID-19 pandemic and blackouts during winter storms in February.
It remains to be seen whether that’s a winning message, but for now, Texans would rather have actor Matthew McConaughey as their governor than O’Rourke.
In one survey of the University of Texas, Tyler, and The Dallas Morning News, McConaughey is far more popular than Democrats hoped.
Participants were asked whether they would be more likely to support McConaughey or O’Rourke if the actor entered the race.
Forty-nine percent responded to McConaughey compared with 27 percent for O’Rourke – a difference of 22 points. 19% said they would choose someone else, and 4% refused to answer.
The poll has a random statewide sample of 1,106 registered voters surveyed by phone and online November 9-16 and has a sampling error of plus or minus 2.9 points. hundred.
Would you vote for McConaughey for governor of O’Rourke?
Yes: 97% (246 Votes)
No: 3% (7 votes)
McConaughey hasn’t announced his gubernatorial campaign yet but has spoken about it.
Politico reported in May that he had said it was a “real consideration” and that he was “quietly calling out influential people in Texas political circles, including an Energy CEO and far-reaching average Republicans, leaving them more enthusiastic in the race.”
Hill reported in September that McConaughey said he was still “measuring it”.
Asked later by New York Times What he meant by that, he said, “I like to measure things out before I join. And you must join before joining. “
Emphasizing even more, he said, “Who am I going to be? Where can I be most helpful? For me, is politics the most helpful embassy for myself, for my family, for most people in my life? ”
In October, the actor told NPR host Scott Simon that he is not running for governor – unless he decides to do so.
McConaughey said, “I wasn’t – until I…
Currently, he is not running for governor. However, the Texans still prefer him over O’Rourke – and even more than the incumbents.
The survey showed McConaughey topping Abbott by 8 points, 43% to 35%. Twenty-two percent said they would choose another person.
But the poll also showed that if all three candidates ran, O’Rourke and McConaughey would split the anti-Abbott ratio of 26 to 27 percent, while 37 percent would support the incumbent.
Some of the bipartisan support that McConaughey enjoys could be eroded if he runs for governor and has to take up positions on issues.
“He seemed to simply enjoy the publicity. It doesn’t work that way. He needs to pick a party. … No one knows what this guy stands for,” said Gilberto Hinojosa, Texas Democratic Party Chairman, Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
Like McConaughey himself speak in a September podcast, “I’m more of a layman and philosopher-poet-politician than I am a definitive politician.”
