Police respond to ‘bicycle lock’ attack that killed 14-year-old Valentina Orellana Peralta

Responding to a 911 call citing an argument and shooting Thursday, Los Angeles police not only shot the suspect but also fatally shot a girl in a locker room with her mother. The girl has been identified as Valentina Orellana Peralta by the LA County Coroner.
The LAPD said the assault suspect and Peralta both died at the scene. The female victim of the assault was taken to hospital with moderate to severe injuries to her face and head. The suspect has not yet been identified.
No guns were found at the scene, despite initial reports of shots being fired and the police’s subsequent decision to open fire on the suspect.
Police believe a “very heavy padlock” made of steel or metal found near the suspect was used in the attack. Witnesses also testified that the alleged assault victim had an “irregular” bicycle lock.
Police arrived at an LA Burlington Store just before noon to answer a 911 call. According to LAPD Captain Stacy Spell, while searching for the suspect, the LAPD encountered a second assault and a “discharge”. officer-involved gun” took place.
A bullet penetrated the drywall behind the suspect and hit 14-year-old Peralta. She was found and pronounced dead as police conducted a search for more suspects and victims. Police said the changing room was out of sight of officers, located behind the suspect.
When asked to confirm whether the girl was shot by police, LAPD Assistant Chief Dominic Choi said, “Preliminarily, we believe it was an officer’s round.”
“This chaotic incident that resulted in the death of an innocent child is tragic and has taken a toll on all involved,” Sheriff Michel Moore said in a statement Thursday night. “I am deeply saddened by the passing of this young woman and I know no words can ease the unimaginable pain of this family.”
The shooting is being investigated by the California Department of Justice.
