Albuquerque Police Department is asking for the public’s help in locating an “interesting vehicle” that could be linked to the recent killings of four Muslim men in the city. Police posted images of the car to social media on Sunday night, saying it may have been used as a “means of conveyance” in the recent killings.
The car is described as either a dark gray or silver Volkswagen Passat or a Jetta sedan with four doors and tinted windows. “We have a very, very strong connection,” Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller said Sunday. “We have an interesting vehicle… We need to find this vehicle. We are outraged by these attacks and will not relax in our quest for justice for those we have lost.” It is unclear where the pictures of the car were taken.
The first of four killings in New Mexico’s largest city was reported in November 2021, when 62-year-old Mohammad Ahmadi was shot dead outside a halal cafe. Aftab Hussein, 41, was killed in the parking lot of his apartment building in July. Then, less than a week later, on August 1, 27-year-old Muhammad Afzaal Hussain was shot dead outside his home. A fourth Muslim man, believed to be in his 20s, was killed Friday night. His identity remains unknown. The fourth death came a day after police said they believed Hussain’s death was linked to the previous deaths and that Hussain and Hussein were both members of the same mosque. Authorities are now trying to establish a link to Ahmadi’s death in November.
A statement from Española Mayor John Ramon Vigil, for whom Hussain was working at the time of his death, said Hussain was “accidentally the target of a senseless act of violence.” Vigil described his colleague as “gentle and friendly and quick to laugh”.
In another statement, the Albuquerque Police Department confirmed that the FBI was involved and urged the public to come forward with information. Police said they have set up a public portal for the public to upload videos or images that could help solve the killings.
