Pokimane wants a kid-safe version of Twitch

Letting children use the Internet, especially unsupervised, always comes with risks. Various tools and subsections of websites have created ways to help filter unwanted content from being viewed by underage eyes and Pokimane think it’s time Twitch do like that.

Twitch streamers focus on different topics, like sharing gameplay with fans or providing viewers with insights into a person’s real life or excursions in an IRL stream. Unfortunately, game-related or not, much of the content that is streamed isn’t made for kids, but there isn’t a very effective way to prevent kids from viewing it.

Twitch streamer Pokimane who was the target of recent hate raids, discussed her concerns about children on the platform in a recent stream. According to Pokimane, these hate attacks have been heavily involved with children, who she says ‘make it all over again’ and ‘don’t know what better.’ In an effort to combat this kind of behavior and ensure that kids have a safe place to watch streams that work for them, Pokimane believes it’s time for a kids version of Twitch, or at least a way to do it. to filter out unsafe streams.

Many will likely agree with Pokimane, as NSFW content has expanded across the platform. Some might argue that it is ultimately up to the parents or guardians of children to decide what is safe and not to let them see and participate, but additional tools can help with this. With Twitch’s efficient channel browsing, there’s no easy way to allow kids to watch safe content while blocking inappropriate content.

This is not the first time a video streaming platform has offered this type of filtering service. YouTube, which has its own streaming service and possibly Twitch’s biggest competitor, has a version of YouTube Kids that helps block unwanted content. It is not easy, for some quite Terrible things happened on YouTube Kids before, but it blocks many of the free content available in the full version of YouTube.

With that being said, Twitch streamers banned regularly violated existing rules on Twitch. Letting the company determine whether to filter a streamer’s entire channel on a suggested version of Twitch Kids would be one way to start, but even those approved can do something about it. unusual is not good for children and Twitch will only be able to reply after the fact.

Implementing rules or filters cannot guarantee the safety of children’s viewing, and therefore cannot block them. Twitch total. However, adding a curated channel list or a filter specifically for kids can at least help weed out the most serious content.
