The Pokemon The franchise is 25 years old and gives fans the chance to catch, train, and befriend 898 different Pokemon as of the time of writing. This sounds like a huge amount of digital bag monsters to collect, but some fans are still not satisfied. One Pokemon Special fans recruited an AI to create brand new fan-made Pokemon designs.

Pokemon Fans have been creating their own Pokemon designs for almost as long as the series has survived. Some of these designs are New Pokemon for the fan-made game and regions, while others are regional variations or different evolutionary stages of existing Pokemon.

Max Woolf, who works as a Data Scientist at BuzzFeed in San Francisco, recently took to Twitter to share some fan-made Pokemon designs. What sets his creations apart from the crowd is the fact that he makes them by asking a bot to look at every existing Pokemon and then assign it to create its own monsters. The result is everything as cute, stylized, and sometimes downright weird as some of the official Pokemon designs available throughout the franchise. In fact, most of them will fit into any existing part Pokemon media.

The use of AI to create highly detailed and complex works of art is becoming more and more popular as the evolution of AI continues. This is not the first time video game fans used AI to create fan art, but it is possibly one of the most accurate. Woolf’s AI did an excellent job of mimicking Pokemon artistic style. More importantly, however, AI seems to have internalized the design ethos of the franchise. Each of its creations reflects the soft shapes and bright colors common in the franchise, though some of them feature more intricate designs than others.

As I write, it seems Pokemon Fans have embraced these fan-made designs with open arms. Although relatively little information is packed with these designs, unlike other fan-made Pokemon designs In the past, this hasn’t stopped other Twitter users from sharing their artwork. Some users have even started choosing typings, names and evolution trees for Woolf creations. For his part, Woolf seemed so excited by the positive feedback that he created two more batches of AI-generated Pokemon and shared them in the same thread.
