Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl Players Criticize Onix According to Animation
Having a Pokemon follow their trainer while exploring the world sounds like a cute concept on paper. Brilliant diamond and Shining pearls, released worldwide on November 19, is a remake of the 2006 Nintendo DS titles Diamond Pokemon and Pokemon Pearl. On Reddit, a user flash_baxx criticized the next animation of Onix, a Rock-type Pokemon from the first generation of the game.
Although it looks like a giant snake made of rock, Onix does not slide or creep behind the player, instead, it hovers in mid-air while in a normally vertical position. Onix is also depicted as barely larger than the player character, despite having previously been considered one of the biggest first-generation Pokemon.
Many commenters agreed with flash_baxx and similarly criticized the spin-off animations of Pokemon like Ekans and Seviper. Additionally, some Pokemon that are based on inanimate objects, such as the ball-like Drifloon, are disliked for barely showing any movement in their tracking animations. Another animation that received a lot of criticism is Milotic, a type of Water known in the universe for its grace. Instead of “swimming” in the air like in previous titles, Milotic is mostly still frozen behind the player.
Tracking and animation mechanics are negatively compared with Pokemon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Pokemon: Come on, Eevee!, released three years ago in 2018, as well as previous remakes including Pokemon HeartGold and Pokemon SoulSilver. When Onix appeared in Let’s go titles, which only focused on the first generation of Pokemon, fans wondered why the smoother animations from the 2018 games weren’t used.
