Pokémon BDSP Fans Disappointed by Roomba-like Walking Animation

One of the most special parts of Pokémon BDSP is the ability to have your Pokémon go with you – but players couldn’t help but marvel at some of the Pokémon’s rigid walking animations.
Many expectations Pokémon Brilliant Diamond / Shining Pearl brought Sinnoh favorites along with new cute features to the Generation IV remake. Take a leaf out of Pokémon Soul Silver / Heart Gold, Pokémon can now walk alongside player characters outside of their Pokéballs.
This feature is one of the Pokémon the franchise’s sweetest design decisions, making the bond between players and their Pokémon all the more real. That’s why when Nintendo announced this as a feature for Pokémon Shining Diamonds / Shining Pearls, many fans were excited to finally see their Poké friends in the underworld again.
However, some players were disappointed by some of their favorite games PokémonAnimated pictures of walking, criticizing the stiff and lifeless movements of the models.

WHAT’S WHAT WITH A POKÉMON BDSP WALKING ANIM?
During the game, the player can choose a Pokémon from their party to go with them. Most Pokémon have their own unique walking animations ranging from Arbok was sliding with Venonat’s graceful steps.
Even so, in a Reddit post by user UrFriendlySpider-Man, it became clear that not all animations received the same level of care. In the video, the UrFriendlySpider-Man player character runs along a path, followed by a coiled Ekans. Instead of a snake slithering as expected, Ekans just curled up, sliding across the ground stiffly.
The strange movements of the models have led many on the r/Pokémon subreddit to point out that Ekans moves more like Roomba more than a snake. Looking at the round, static model, it’s actually an accurate comparison to an automatic vacuum.
In addition, other snake-like Pokémon unfortunately receive the same treatment. Pokémon like Milotic are made in floating or sliding static patterns, making the beautiful Pokémon look lifeless.
Looking at the overall collection of walking animations, it’s odd to see such a wide range of details. While the zigzag Pokémon are left with balloon-like movements, others prefer Garchomp or Golem is given multiple unique chains.
For a game all about creating friendships and special relationships with Pokémon, it’s sad to see some games left out. Part of the fun of these games, especially the walk together feature, is seeing the personalities of your player character’s party. So without equal expressiveness, many Pokémon models pale in comparison.
Now, it’s unknown if Nintendo wants to deal with this or not. Animation, especially at this scale, is no small task, and overhauling any kind of walking Pokémon animation would be a massive undertaking.
During the measurement, Pokémon Brilliant Diamond / Shining Pearl available to play on Switch.
