A new Planeswalker enters the Magic: The Gathering multiverse in the upcoming Kamigawa return in the cyberpunk-inspired set Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty.
Kaito Shizuki is a ninja from Kamigawa, the central character of the new part story. Shizuki’s Spark was activated by Himoto, the Kami of Spark.
His card supports the Ninjas, one of the important tribes found in Neon Dynasty. In terms of mechanics, Ninjas are similar to Rogues in that they focus on dealing direct damage to opponents to achieve a variety of effects. Ninja usually draw cards instead of supporting mill effects like Rogues from Zendikar Rising. There are currently no legal Ninjas in the Standard. Neon Dynasty will introduce the tribe with the current format.
This is MagicKaito Shizuki’s New Traveler.
- Energy value: 1UB
- Type: Legendary Traveler Kaito
- Rarity: Mythic Rare
- Start Loyalty: Ba
- Static Ability: At the beginning of your last move, if Kaito Shizuki enters the battlefield this turn, he removes.
- First ability: +1: Draw a card. Ten discards a card unless you attack this turn.
- Second possibility: -2: Generate a 1/1 Green Ninja Creature token with “Cannot block this Creature.”
- Third ability: -7: You get the icon “Whenever a Creature you control deals battle damage to a player, look for a Blue or Black Creature card in your library, place it it enters the battlefield, then shuffles.”
The key to most successful Planeswalkers is the ability to defend itself and allow multiple activations before the opponent can destroy it. Kaito Shizuki’s static ability is a great defense mechanism that almost guarantees at least two activations.
Dismissing it the first turn it is played allows its controller to safely activate -2 without worrying about a deadly attack. Then on the second turn after attacking with an unblockable token, the +1 turn turns into a draw. Here’s a great line to make that align with the value-based game plan the Ninjas use.
Outside of the Ninja tribe, Kaito Shuzuki should be a good choice as a game worth three energy in the usual control or tempo decks or Blue and Black controls. The three-mana walker is often played for its ability to create an increased advantage, not necessarily to win the game. The Ninja token is a threat that represents a clock and must be killed. The card draw is well worth it and helps you hit the drop on turn four or find an important interactive piece against aggro.
The last possibility is to win the game. Being able to get a Free Creature any time Creature you control deals battle damage to the player is value for free and quickly represents undefeated board status.
Kamigawa’s reveal began on January 27 leading up to the film’s full release on February 18.
