Paolo Venziano, a 14th-century master from Venice, gets his first show in the U.S.

The central panel is split in two. The decrease half reveals Mary cradling her toddler son, and the higher half Jesus being crucified on the cross. Mary’s grief is such that she collapses into the arms of her companions. The 4 different panels depict six standing saints, and the reverse sides of the wings present saints Christopher and Blaise. These reverse sides, that are all you see when the panel is closed, are intentionally painted much less finely in opposition to a plain pink background (as an alternative of gold) to emphasise, against this, the sacredness of what’s inside.
