Overwatch 2 should swap out the seasonal event in the archives with something new
While not sure how Overwatch 2 will approach its seasons or its cosmetics, players can expect the game to have the same events as the original. Are from Christmas-themed winter wonderland to spooky Halloween Terror, each event offers something special for players. However, while most of these events will return in the sequel with some brawls and new skins, some special events should be dropped.
Overwatch 2 should consider bringing the Archives into the past. At one point, this event was one of the most popular in the game, as players look forward to it every time it returns. However, it has become increasingly dated in its most recent appearances, and a sequel will likely make it more outdated than ever. If the Repository is swapped, a more interesting event can be included to fill the gap.
Why the archive should be removed in Overwatch 2
Main attraction of Events Archive is its PvE mission. Players witness Tracer’s first mission in Uprising, experience a Blackwatch mission that went wrong in Retribution, and see some of the story setup for the Storm Rising sequel. All of these missions play out differently and feel unique, with Null Sector robots and Talon troops mixed in with a variety of objectives. However, players have been fed up with the event due to the lack of new missions added in its most recent appearances, with Blizzard instead adding variations of the three existing levels.
Although focusing on content design for Overwatch 2‘s PvE campaign instead of adding new Archive quests, the story mode itself renders the Archive pointless. Blizzard may add three existing missions to the PvE campaign, with the Archives cosmetic being included in the regular list of unlockable skins. With the sequel set to focus more on PvE, a new quest each year is a lot less appealing, and it would be better if quests were added consistently as the year went on. With proper PvE mode in Overwatch 2, Storage and its sporadic task additions will no longer be needed.
Potential events that Overwatch 2 could feature
When it comes to replacing the Archive, there are a lot of interesting facts that can be added in its place. A popular request is the Valentine’s Day event, as players have designed skins like Lovebringer Mercy that would be a perfect fit for it. Dialogue and emojis can also detract from an existing relationship, with Genji preparing a box of chocolates for Mercy or Tracer while looking at Emily’s photo. A sadder emoji could see Widowmaker holding a memento of her deceased husband.
If Blizzard wants a Overwatch event not directly related to real world holiday, there is potential for a completely original concept like Overwatch vs. Talon. Relying on the ongoing battle between the two organizations could prove to be extremely interesting, and some unique mechanics could be introduced focusing on the two teams. Obviously, special cosmetics associated with each sex can also be incorporated.
Regardless of whether Blizzard wants to create an event themed around a real-world holiday or design something entirely new, it would be worth it to replace the outdated Archives event. While the three quests should still be maintained, as they have become indispensable to Overwatchof legend, there’s no reason they shouldn’t be permanently accessible through the PvE campaign. While it’s unclear if any events will actually be added or removed when the game launches, the Archive will be the easiest to swap.
Overwatch 2 is in development for PC, PS4, Switch and Xbox One.
