Oscar Garcia Maceiras Inditex CEO Marta Ortega Becomes President – WWD

LONDON – Zara‘s parents Inditex has a new CEO and president, completing the handover of the generation that began a decade ago when the founder Amancio Ortega resign as president.

Oscar Garcia Maceiras has been appointed CEO, effective immediately, while Ortega’s daughter Marta Ortega Perez has been appointed president of the group, effective April 1.

Pablo Isla, who spent 17 years at Inditex, as vice president, chief executive officer and executive chairman, will leave the company on March 31, as planned.

To date, Maceiras is the general counsel of Inditex and secretary of the board of directors. Like Isla, Maceiras comes from a legal and financial background. Maceiras joined Inditex in March 2021 as secretary general and board secretary.

The company points to his “deep experience in managing businesses and teams” and says he has led transformation projects in his 20 years of professional practice. He has worked in both the public sector, as a Spanish public and private attorney, for firms such as Banco Pastor, Banco Popular, SAREB and Banco Santander.

Maceiras replaces Carlos Crespo, who has been CEO since July 2019. Crespo will remain at Inditex, taking on the role of COO, focusing on sustainability and digital transformation, two areas where the company company describes as “of prime importance” for its strategy.

Maceiras said he is eager to take on the role of CEO and work with a team “full of youth, experience and talent in all the fields and countries in which we are present”.

Ortega Perez has spent the past 15 years at the company on the creative side, tapping into talents including Steven Meisel, Fabien Baron, Karl Templer and Luca Guadagnino to collaborate on special campaigns and projects. She has also launched new high-end collections, including Zara SRPLS and Charlotte Gainsbourg by Zara.

This weekend Ortega Perez will open a major Peter Lindbergh reminisces which she organized in the company’s hometown of A Coruña, Spain. Ortega will continue to oversee Zara’s brand image and fashion proposition, the company said.

In its statement, the Board of Directors thanked Isla for his “leadership and vision” during the 17 years he led the company. He will continue to serve as executive chairman until March 31.

Ortega Perez said the company is “extremely grateful” to Isla for his dedication and extraordinary work over the years.

“I want to emphasize his enormous contribution, not only to our team, but to the fashion industry in general. I’ve lived and breathed this company since I was a kid and I’ve learned from all the great professionals I’ve worked with over the past 15 years,” said Ortega Perez.

The appointments will be submitted for approval at the next Annual General Meeting of Shareholders. The team will report third-quarter results on December 15.
