The last time number 3 Oregon and the number 23 Utah meet was during the 2019 Pac-12 Championship Game, when Ducks ran Steam Utes 37-15 and took down College football Playoff aspirations. This time, Utah could be vying for Oregon’s CFP hopes as the two finished Saturday night in a game that meant divisional titles for both schools.
Oregon could hold the Pac-12 North with a win, while a win would give the Pac-12 South a win for Utah. Either way, a potential rematch in the championship game on December 3 remains a possibility, regardless of which team wins this regular meeting. While a loss won’t remove the Ducks from the congress title competition, it will almost certainly end their hopes of appearing in the CFP for the first time since 2014.
This will be the biggest test to date for Utah, which is without a win against existing teams in the CFP Leaderboard. Oregon owns a September 11 road victory over Ohio State #4, but the Ducks have not beaten a ranked team since and have looked vulnerable over the past two months. It all sets up for a close battle between uniquely ranked Pac-12 teams.
Oregon vs. Utah: Need to know
Run battle: Both teams run in the offensive direction and are sure to defend the run, meaning this game can be decided by which team can impose its will first. Oregon ranks 10th nationally for dashing and second nationally with 31 hasty touchdowns. Utah ranks 18th nationally for dash speed and 4th nationally for yards per dash with 5.86. Utes deeper when running again with Tavion Thomas, Micah Bernard and TJ Pledger combine to form a bruised trio. Since Oregon’s CJ Verdell was lost during the season in Week 5, Ducks were heavily dependent on Travis Dye as seniors have demonstrated the ability to deliver workloads.
Thibodeaux Factor: After going through two games without a sack, the runner next to the Oregon star Kayvon Thibodeaux made his presence felt with two sacks in Ducks victory Washington state last week. One of those sacks impeded Washington State’s driveway early in the fourth quarter and helped tie the Cougars steady for field targeting. The Ducks took over the game from there. However, creating a similar impact against the Utes can be challenging. Utah only allows 10 bags for the entire season, ranking in the top 10 national rankings. Thibodeaux resists running well, but he’s elite as a passer and minimizing his impact will be important for Utah.
Rising star: This could be a country breakout game for Utah quarterback Cam Rising. After beating transfer Baylor Charlie Brewer For the early-season job, Rising threw 14 touchdowns compared to just two interceptions. He also proved to be a running menace. After signing with Texas in 2018, Rising moved to the team during his only season with the Longhorns, then moved to Utah again on a transfer in 2019. He played little last season. but finally proved himself as a sophomore fourth year student. He now faces an Oregon defense tied for 11th nationally in 14-man interceptions, and he will be tasked with beating Oregon’s battle-tested quarterback. Anthony Brown.
