Opinion | Virginia’s mental health hospitals must be restored

If the commonwealth can provide emergency services for natural disasters, it could create enhanced facilities for those in need of immediate psychiatric treatment. To address Virginia’s mental health crisis, emergency facilities may be established on the premises of existing DBHDS facilities or other hospitals with psychiatric beds, with patients referred to if capacity allows. Because patients in the emergency room don’t have a treatment environment, or even a lot of treatment, surgical psychiatric hospitals that start treatment right away can help some patients settle down without a hospital stay long.
