DEZMONESPEEDRUNS’ OBLIVION WORLD RECORD SPEEDRUN
In a video posted on New Year’s Eve, DezmoneSpeedruns completed an impressive 2 minutes. 34 seconds running speed Oblivion. Leveraging a mix of old and new glitches and speeding tricks, they were able to beat the previous world record (which he also held) equals 2 full seconds.
Notably, Dezmone relied on wall cutting to skip large parts of the game. Cutting walls puts the player’s character out of bounds, causing them to fall through buildings and past enemies. It’s a potentially risky move if done unsuccessfully, as an infinity wall can ruin an entire speed race.
Also, Dezmone used a newer technique called loadwarping. This happens when the player opens the door and pauses the game in succession. As a result, speedrunners can carry a character from a previously saved file through doors, instead of the currently playing character. This eliminates precious seconds, resulting in a faster overall run.
Even better, loadwarping can actually move characters from several different save files at once. In the video, Dezmone activates the glitch while their character is sitting. Unable to keep up with the player’s character positioning, the game pushes both characters out of bounds to go further in the game.
Furthermore, Dezmone uses a well-known bypass – Dragonfire bypass. First discovered in 2007, this bypass feature allows players to pass through doors in the Imperial City. As they explained, “In the final main quest, the doors in the Imperial City are swapped with an identical door where the city was affected by Daedra’s attack. For some reason, one of these doors can be accessed by cutting the wall.“
