Looks like Nvidia’s latest mid-range graphics card would be a bad choice for cryptocurrency mining. The information has been discovered by VideoCardz, revealed that all RTX 3050 models appear to use the Lite Hash Rate (LHR) algorithm which significantly reduces mining efficiency. It’s not yet clear if the card will officially release with this feature.
If so, that would be great news for gamers and terrible news for crypto miners looking for a cheaper deal to expand their operations. Lowering the value of cards for miners, and maybe even a few scalers, could mean more units end up in the hands of gamers. However, there are still other issues affecting the production of graphics cards at the present time. Either way, we’ll be able to see how this turns out at the end of the month.
Miners may have to look elsewhere
There’s a major reason the RTX 3050 is a less than ideal choice for crypto miners. The LHR algorithm makes tokens much less efficient for specific mining. Basically, the algorithm forces the tag to drop from 20 MH/s to 12.5 MH/s in four seconds. Under those conditions, VideoCardz noted a rough estimate of how long it would take to recoup the cost of the card would be around 500 days of mining. However, that is only when the card is received with an MSRP of 250 USD. Considering that AIB models can be much more expensive, the return on investment can take longer.
Even so, this is still pretty great news for gamers as it won’t sacrifice the gaming performance of the card. The Lite Hash Rate algorithm does not affect games from now on, so don’t worry about it. The move is intended to make life a little harder for miners so gamers can use the RTX 3050 for what it’s meant to be.
Technically, it is yet to be confirmed whether this algorithm will hinder the mining that will be introduced in all of Nvidia’s RTX 3050 graphics cards. As always, look at this with some skepticism until the card reaches consumers on January 27th. Until then, be sure to watch. shock price tag of Nvidia’s 12 GB RTX 3080 card.
