The first results of the 2022 Northern Ireland General Assembly elections have been announced.

Northern Ireland voters voted yesterday (May 5) to elect 90 members of the Stormont parliament.

Sinn Féin (SF) and the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) are in the running for the top spot, with pre-election polls showing the nationalist SF party likely to win the most seats. for the first time in Northern Ireland’s history.

You can track the results as they appear in our interactive chart below. All 90 seats will be assigned to a party when the results are announced, so keep checking back for updates.

Kellie Armstrong of the Multi-Community Alliance Party was announced as the first new Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) after winning the Strangford constituency.

Sinn Fein Vice President Michelle O’Neill meanwhile was re-elected in Mid-Ulster.

There are 18 constituencies in Northern Ireland, each electing five representatives.

The unionist and nationalist parties – those who favor union with the UK or support a united Ireland – share power under the terms of the Good Friday Agreement.

The largest party in the National Assembly after an election appoints the first minister, while the largest party from the other group appoints the first deputy minister.
