Former Nintendo of America VP of Marketing Perrin Kaplan talks about Nintendo’s internal disagreements over the GameCube’s iconic purple color.

November 2021 is proving to be a busy month when it comes to the game’s major anniversaries. Skyrim turned ten years old on the 11th, with Halo and Xbox hit 20 on 15. Nintendo GameCube also hit the two-decade mark, celebrating its 20th anniversary in the US on November 18.

Earlier today, a former Nintendo executive spoke about the release of a console that is now twenty years old. She revealed that GameCubeNintendo’s iconic colors have been quite controversial within Nintendo, with parts of the company voicing concerns about the console’s purple pigmentation.

Several former Nintendo employees recently spoke to Video Games Chronicle about the company’s past two decades. Among them is Perrin Kaplan, former Vice President of Marketing and Corporate Affairs for Nintendo of America. She revealed that the US branch is not a fan of the GameCube’s purple plastic, promoting a black or silver console. However, Nintendo’s president at the time was Hiroshi Yamauchi reject the decision. While Nintendo will eventually roll out white, black, silver, and orange versions, purple remains the iconic GameCube color.

According to Kaplan, Nintendo of America was worried that purple would be too “girly” for a console primarily intended for boys. The US branch is also of interest as it is the first purple console to be released in the US. Kaplan recalls feeling nervous when Nintendo announced the console at E3 2001, fearing the press would mock the GameCube for its unusual look. While those concerns are mostly unfounded, some have argued that the console’s appearance provides no benefit to it.

The Nintendo GameCube ultimately sold around 22 million units during its existence, placing it third behind its main rivals, the PlayStation 2 and the Original Xbox. It also sold about 10 million fewer units than its predecessor, the Nintendo 64. There are a number of reasons for the GameCube’s relatively poor performance, and its arrival could be one of them. . Nintendo’s console has struggled to shake up the mostly unfair perception that it’s meant for kids. This is due to a combination of the GameCube’s looks, Nintendo’s existing reputation, and the company’s overall game design philosophy.

On the other hand, it is not a panel without other handicaps. Eg, GameCube has relatively few major monopolies and over-reliance on first-party titles. The latter was at least partly due to Nintendo’s use of a “Microdisk” mini DVD, which reduced its capacity and prevented the GameCube from functioning as a DVD player. It is also the only console of its generation that does not support some level of online functionality.

However, the console was hardly a complete failure and is still fondly remembered by many gamers. It is also home to many great titles, same as the original Luigi’s Mansion. However, Nintendo of America may not be entirely wrong to worry about GameCube’s appearance.
