Chrono trigger was THE game that got time travel right. Time travel isn’t just a subplot between bigger things, it’s involved with EVERYTHING about this wonderful experience. Players can travel to prehistoric times, medieval times and places where the end times are ending.

The game begins in AD 1000 when the character Chrono is at a festival. At the end of the day, he and his companion were whisked away to AD 600. From then on, Chrono must rebalance time. Aside from the time travel tropes being incredibly well done, the environments in this title are incredibly immersive and the people players encounter are unforgettable. Also, time travel is cool.

2 The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask

The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask is an odd choice over breath of the wild. In a way, it made building the world a little bit better. Certainly not in scope, but in ideas. Regardless, the entire game takes place over the course of 3 days before a horrifying moon collides, destroying Termina and possibly more. Players find themselves in a constant time loop, reliving the same 3 days over and over again. It’s brilliant and perhaps the darkest iteration of the zelda Series. Creating a whole new world outside of Hyrule, with tons of things to do with precious time, really upped the ante in this game.

Those moments when the moon is about to hit the earth, leaving the player to play the song of time to save her from total annihilation are just different than being stalked by a zombie horde at night – Running away from Stalfos. It just hits harder and different. The game still has many deeper meanings that fans continue to debate to this day. Not something breath of the wild can do in the form of speculation.

1 earthbound

in the earthbound, Thirteen-year-old Ness discovers that a strange meteor has crashed in his hometown in the middle of the night. The fate of the world is in Ness’ hands, who must collect multiple tunes to defeat an evil alien before it takes over the world. Similar to Zombies ate my neighbors, earthbound was also brilliant for its weirdness and black humor. But it goes beyond that. Despite its odd plot, the story is absolutely brilliant due to its eccentricity and its parody of American consumerism.

From battling aliens to battling a bunch of vomit that’s come to life, the world never gets boring. What’s more, Ape Inc, the spearhead earthbound, had strong ties to Pokemon and its developer Game Freak. For fans of both series, there was something of an inside joke when entering the drugstore earthbound willingly buying pills or guns instead of going to a poke-mart and buying more innocent items. Seeing the parallels only adds to the charm of the game itself.

Which of course was not directly intended, but implemented for convenience and simplicity. Still, aliens aren’t the only threat Ness and his gang must contend with. There are gangs, the police, cults and angry animals. Don’t forget the attacking blob of puke. The final boss is also worth mentioning and at the same time probably not worth mentioning, that’s how terrifying it is.
