Nightdive teases PowerSlave/Exhumed as its next classic FPS remaster

Nightdive Studios is proving itself to be the expert on remakes of classic PC games, thanks to great games like Doom 64, Turok 1 and 2and System Shock: Remastered – the studio’s first full remake. Now, the developer is presenting the classic 90s PowerSlave FPS as the next game to get a rework.

PowerSlave – also known as Exhumed (much better European name) or Seireki 1999: Pharaoh no Fukkatsu – is a Build Engine FPS that was released on PC, PlayStation 1 and SEGA Saturn from 1996-1997. It was quite hard to find until it was shocked re-released on GOG last year, but just an inferior version of MS-DOS with terrible controls and weird design.

Currently, CEO of Nightdive Studios, Stephen Kick tweeted a tease hints that PowerSlave/Exhumed will be the next game to be remade at his studio – a close-up shot that is clearly one of PowerSlave’s Egypt-themed icons. Because Nightdive is particularly famous for its first-person games and Its own blood: Remastered also uses the Build Engine, a remake of PowerSlave/Exhumed would fit its category very well.

Of course, the big question is whether the remake will follow the PC version or the console version, where the game forgoes straight levels for a more Metroidvania-like design. An unofficial remake called PowerSlave EX can be found online if you search hard enough, made by Samuel Villarreal – who works for Nightdive. An official remaster may have been mentioned back to 2015, but there’s been no news about the project since.

If real, the remaster could be officially announced at 3D Realms retro FPS Realms Deep premieres next month. The question that remains, of course, is whether Nightdive will continue to call it the really odd PowerSlave or if they make sense and will call it Exhumed: Remastered instead.
