Nicole Byer: BBW (Big Beautiful Weirdo) On Netflix, ‘Nailed It!’ The host of jokes about the problem of screwing and white women being arrested

Nicole Byer has amassed a critical and popular fan base, as well as several Emmy Award nominations, for hosting the show. Nail it! on Netflix. In a special first solo for the streaming giant, Byer delivered her own comedic stunts in the form of dating confessions and revelations about her interactions with Caucasians.

Gist: The last time I sat down with Nicole Byer was 5 years ago for a podcast interview, she’s working on an overlooked late-night sketching project for FOX (Party here) but still emerged as the star of her own projects, breaking out from MTV talk shows like Girl’s password starring in MTV’s Exactly loose Nicole.

Things have looked even more hopeful for Byer since then, professionally if not personally.

In addition to her Emmy Award nominations, she is also a host Nail it!, Byer also landed a gig with John Cena co-host of the TBS competition series, Delete; she’ll be starring in the new NBC sitcom, Grand Crew, premiering on December 14; and she hosts at least four different podcasts at last count. But her solo debut shows Netflix that she’s more focused on her personal life, which is equally funny and tragic. The opening sketch establishes this, as Byer imagines herself as a stripper, pole-riding in a two-piece suit with the necessary heels. Unlike Lizzo in Hustlers, Byer didn’t quite pull it off. Because, comedy!

What do comedy specials remind you of?: Byer has the same confident stage presence as Michelle Buteau, with whom she also shares her open embarrassment about why men still send unsolicited pictures of their genitals to them. women.

Memorable Jokes: While Byer has definitely made it to Hollywood, she opens her hour by reminding New Yorkers (she filmed at the Gramercy Theater) that her comedic roots still come from within Fruit big apple, informs us, among other things: “That’s the city where I started doing comedy. That’s the city where I dropped a pizza, a cheese side, and then ate it! ”

NYC also saw much of Byer’s early misconduct in sex and dating.

However, now is not all about her love life. She spends the first half-hour on some of the strange effects of our current “pandemic” as well as the Black Lives Matter protests last summer. Even that discussion, which includes some finesse from the crowd (Byer originally had stage time and a growing reputation in NYC as a skilled improviser) before she transitioned to indie), which eventually turn into revelations about Byer’s sexual preferences and her curiosity.

Our Take: Some of her sexual revelations are visually memorable, but they pale in comparison to many of her stories about white women. From the hospital nurse who “monitored” Byer’s needs after she sprained her ankle, to their loud and proud personalities on their birthdays – she manages the engagements. references not only Marvel and DC, but also “the Pokemon world” — or the pretentious women in her twerking classroom, even JK Rowling. Lots of comedians, most famously Dave Chappelle, have carried on with Rowling’s “TERF” beliefs. But Byer has tried to dig deeper by taking on Rowling’s Harry Potter books that are odd and improbable, but might convince you half-jokingly by calling the author “JKKK Rowling.”

It’s the weird and wild thing about American capitalism, circa 2021, to realize that even an Emmy-nominated comedian and actress will scream Patreon’s exclusive podcast. her while she’s getting that Netflix money. But in reality, Byer directs viewers to subscribe “90 days Bae” (3,221 patrons as I type this) in time BBW.

And again, she confesses that even a slightly popular comedian/actor can sometimes find himself drunk in an airport bathroom, pooping, eating, crying and singing. No worries, ladies and germs. OK! And if she’s okay, then you’ll be fine too.

Our call: INSTRUCTIONS IT. Of course she understood the mission. And yes, you could also say, she nailed it.

Based in NYC but will go anywhere looking for the scoop: Ice cream or news. He also tweeted @thecomicscomic and podcast half-hour episodes with comedians revealing the origin story: Comics of Comics presents the first last thing.
