The NHL’s 2021-22 regular schedule to be announced this week includes time off for the Winter Olympics in Beijing, ESPN reported on Monday.
The opening ceremony of the global competition in China is scheduled for February 4, 2022, with men’s ice hockey qualifying matches starting around February 9.
According to reports, the Olympic break in the NHL’s schedule will run from February 5 to 22.
However, NHL player participation has yet to be approved. The NHL did not take time off to allow the players to participate in the 2018 Olympics in Pyeongchang, ending five consecutive Winter Olympics with NHL players.
Ahead of the 2021 Stanley Cup Final, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said “there are concerns about whether it is reasonable for our players to participate and we are shutting down for the Olympic break”.
According to ESPN, an agreement between the NHL and the International Olympic Committee is “still in the works”.
