Nexus mods ban all files that are “against diversity”.

After a controversial mod for Spider-Man on PC goes live, Nexus Mods immediately bans the user and makes a diversity statement on the site.

In this modern era, the media is starting to open its eyes to more diverse portrayals, and that includes the gaming industry. There are a number of great games these days that deal with inclusive and LGBTQ+ issues, showing that society is more openly acknowledging that the world could be more accepting of diversity. However, there are still those who fight against it. But for all the people who are against inclusion, there are also those who fight for human rights.

Take Nexus Mods as an an example. To Spider-Man Remastered Released on Steam on August 1, the modding community has been busy creating custom content and uploading it to the site. A modder decided to get his opinion of the LGBTQ+ community known by swapping out all of the game’s Pride flags for US flags. Nexus immediately removed the file and banned the user, causing some controversy. A recent blog post spotted by The Gamer issued a statement saying the site will not advocate for those who are consciously “anti-inclusivity” and that action will be taken against it.

The post goes on to say that while there’s no way to stop people from making arbitrary mods, the site has the power to at least keep them off its own database. It also urges those who don’t like the policy to delete their account. While Nexus Mods has had its own share of controversy in the past, it is one of the largest websites in the world for users to download custom PC mods. Getting banned from the site for intentionally “trolling” the community with anti-inclusiveness files means one less site for hate speech to spread to.

Given the sheer number of addons people are uploading to Nexus Mods, it can be difficult to monitor everyone. Luckily, there are plenty of mods that are simply there to increase the enjoyment of the game. For example, for each file that promotes exclusion, there are much more interesting ones, such as the mod for Spiderman which turns players into Stan Lee to honor the late Marvel icon.

The LGBTQ+ community is already struggling to be accepted in gaming. Recently, Twitch streamer Keffals was hit, and as a trans person, she believes it was a deliberate attempt to humiliate her. Couple that with the string of hate raids that have plagued the streaming platform, it seems there’s still a long way to go. sites like Nexus Mods seem to be taking steps in the right direction.
