New Pokémon Go developer’s diary talks about seasonal content creation, narrative design, and the future of the game

Continuing the company’s approach to keeping players abreast of development, Niantic has released a new set of Dev Diaries for December focusing on the development team’s approach to building Season of Heritage in Pokémon Go.

Dev Diaries focuses on everything from developing the ideas and content that make up each Pokémon Go’s sections, including logo design, story creation, and even how it impacts the future of the game itself.

With each new season of content, the team at Niantic has to make sure it creates a somewhat coherent story that can span months and events. This usually builds up to one major event at the end of the season that incorporates new mechanics, Pokémon, etc that were introduced during that same season.

During planning, developers draw from past events and ongoing content to ensure each installment feels distinct from older iterations. This resulted in pulling more from the finished Naughty Season on the narrative side and incorporating more elements from the

While talking about the development of the story of the part, many members of the Niantic team mentioned how they wished to build this story “around the concept of heritage” using historic sites, Professor Willow’s mysterious doors and continuing research.

Live game director at Niantic Michael Steranka also mentioned that the seasonal themes and storylines in the Pokémon Go will likely serve as a focal point for future in-game events, social content, and more.

This doesn’t mean seasonal content will be the only content type included Pokémon Go from now on, but larger events and activities will likely tie into the overall story in some way. Niantic has already started working on this idea in its ongoing events, with the upcoming New Year 2022 event including a small mention of Heritage Season.

Developers are also using sections as scores to rate and re-evaluate elements of Pokémon Go to make sure the game is constantly improving. This includes content that focuses on remote play such as increasing the effectiveness of Incense when stationary, increasing the damage of Remote Strike, and more that is constantly being talked about in regards to balancing live promotions. and provide players with a safe way to play.
