New Horizons players share the heartwarming story of Dream Island
Through Dreaming, an Animal Crossing: New Horizons player shares how they were able to visit a friend’s island after they passed away.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons launched at a time when many people are stuck at home due to the global pandemic. The game brought many players together, urging them to visit each other’s islands and share their creations. This was initially only possible when two players were online, but after a major update back in Summer 2020, Animal Crossing: New Horizons saw the addition of Dream Islands.
For those unfamiliar with the Dream Islands in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, it basically allows the user “Dream” and visit other players’ islands even when they are not online. When visiting the Island of Dreams, the player can interact with the villagers, the island, and the owner of the island. With this feature, a player was able to visit their friends even though they passed away.
A Reddit user named MajesticSamm shared an image with a friend during a visit to Dream Island. MajesticSamm explains that their friend passed away in May and used the Dream Island feature to see her again. It’s an incredibly sad, yet touching story and just another example of Animal Crossing: New Horizons bring people together. However, in order to be able to visit the Dream Islands, the owner of the island needs to set up a Dream Address. To overcome this obstacle, the deceased friend’s sister obtained the Dream Address and shared it with MajesticSamm.
While the player can visit and interact with a friend’s island, no changes to that island will be saved. Dream Island works like a clone of the original. However, even though there isn’t anyone controlling the Dream Island owner’s character, the fact that the character is present and walking around will certainly remind Reddit users of when the two of them played together.
Others on the Reddit thread have commented on how another video game has created this sense of connection with players who may not be online. The example mentioned is Forza Horizon 5 where players can race against AI Who can take the name of a friend. For MajesticSamm and many others who have posted on the Reddit thread, seeing loved ones passed away in games they share together is often a bittersweet moment.
ONE major update 2.0 for Animal Crossing: New Horizons was released recently has seen many fans rewatch the title for dozens if not hundreds of hours. Many of those hours are sure to include moments where players can connect with each other through this hobby. The inclusion of Dream Islands, letters that players can send to friends and store in their mailboxes, and even races that players can participate in against old friends are reminders. Nice reminder that people can live through the game.
