The new departure lounge at Waterloo International Airport was officially opened on Tuesday as the airport’s ongoing expansion continues to take shape.
The Waterloo Region says the expanded 20,000-square-foot lounge will seat 500 people, plus space for visitors to relax while waiting to board.
Another phase of expansion began this month when the terminal building will be reconfigured to add self-service kiosks and general-use airline counters, with a third line of security planned to speed up screening.
In addition, a new baggage system with self-service drop-off and an expanded sorting area will be added.
These changes will be completed by next spring.
It will cost taxpayers $30 million to complete the airport upgrades as part of the region’s 20-year master plan for the facility.
The fast-growing airport will see half a million travelers arriving and departing via its runways this year.
“Since implementing this expansion plan in 2017, our airport has seen impressive growth – not just in terms of size and passenger numbers – but also in terms of overall job numbers and economic impact,” said Regional Chair Karen Redman.
