New Brunswick opposition calls for summer session after health care restructuring – New Brunswick

As New Brunswick gains traction amid the aftershocks of some top-level healthcare restructuring, politicians on the other side of the Legislature say the PM needs to bring everyone back to discuss the impending crisis.

Premier Blaine Higgs recently sacked his health secretary and fired the CEO of Horizon Health Network after a patient died in an emergency room waiting room in Fredericton.

Dorothy Shephard is succeeded as Secretary of Health by Bruce Fitch as she turns back to social development.

Announcing the changes in a news conference on Friday, Higgs said: “It’s not up to me to lead the health authorities or health authorities, but it’s up to me to make sure the right people are able to do it. And that starts at the top.”

New Brunswick Liberal Party interim leader Roger Melanson said Higgs now needs to call back the legislature for a summer session and focus on developing the health sector situation.

“He can play musical chairs, changing ministers here and there, firing people and throwing people under the bus,” Melanson said. “Obviously it’s harder (for the opposition) to be able to ask questions when you’re not in parliament.”

Megan Mitton, the health critic for the New Brunswick Green Party, agrees.

“I would be delighted if I could go to the legislature today, tomorrow, whenever, and hold the government accountable,” Mitton said Saturday via Zoom. “When he talks about the need for a management change, I agree with Premier Higgs because you’re not managing it well.”

The focus, however, is on the province’s health workers.

Paula Doucet, president of the New Brunswick Nurses Union, said those who work in healthcare are already walking bare bones trying to take any form of summer break.

The recent change may not be “felt on the front lines,” Doucet said. “(It) is a sign that there is a willingness to change.”

Meanwhile, Melanson and Mitton said they hadn’t heard from the government about whether a summer session was possible.
