We’ve had many classic comedies rebooted or revived over the past few years, but Bel-Air seems to be the wildest of the bunch. This re-imagining of Will Smith’s legendary car, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air will not be a multi-scene sitcom like the original but a slick teen drama that offers a A more serious twist on how one kid in Philly’s life is turned upside down when he becomes the prince of a town called Bel-Air.
The first full trailer for the upcoming Peacock original series was just announced this Monday morning (see above), revealing our best look yet at what it has to offer. Smith self-produced executive Jabari Banks plays Will, who we see will capture both the positives and negatives of his new life in this commercial. We are also introduced to some very different versions of familiar characters, like Uncle Phil (Adrian Holmes), Aunt Viv (Cassandra Freeman), cousin Carlton (Olly Sholotan) and the “family manager.” Geoffrey (Jimmy Akingbola).
The bold reinvention of the OG show gives Will even more of a darker backstory. As anyone who knows the lyrics of the opening theme knows, Smith’s Will was moved to Bel-Air after “his mother was scared” because he was in “a little fight.” In the new Bel-Air, it seems Will gets caught up in some serious business that gets him in trouble with the police and, as Geoffrey reveals in the trailer, makes “some bad guys from Philly” want to deal with him ta.
Bel-Air will premiere on Super Bowl Sunday, aka February 13, on Peacock with the first three episodes, with further episodes airing weekly. The streaming service clearly has great hopes for this part, as a second season has already been ordered. But do the audience really want? Riverdale-retell their favorite nostalgic sitcom? We will find out next month.
