NC Experiences A Lot of Natural Disasters Compared To The Rest Of The US

ATLANTIC OCEAN – SEPTEMBER 2: In this NOAA GOES-East satellite transmission, Hurricane Dorian, is now a Cat. Hurricane #4, slowly moving over Grand Bahama Island on September 2, 2019 in the Atlantic Ocean. Dorian moved slowly over the Bahamas at times as little as 1 mph as it caused massive flooding and 150 mph winds (NOAA photo via Getty Images) recently conducted a study on natural disasters and their economic impact. They found that North Carolina ranked highly in terms of number of disasters as well as cost. They analyzed the number of natural disasters in each state since 1980, where NC came in third place behind Texas and Georgia. We’ve got a slightly better rating when it comes to the cost of those disasters, sliding down to fourth place on the list.

Among the natural disasters that have affected North Carolina since 1980 are:

  • Drought (12)
  • Flood (1)
  • Freeze (3)
  • Storm (35)
  • Storm (24)
  • Wildfire (2)
  • Winter Storm (15)

In terms of likelihood for each type of natural event, natural disasters tend to correlate with the broader climate of each region, as you might expect. With North Carolina stretching from ocean to mountains is a contributing factor to why we experience so many types of natural disasters. The most frequent natural disasters are storms. This is most likely due to the fact that storms form over land and tend to be smaller in size. Overwater storms are most common in places like Florida and Hawaii. We also get our fair share of them in NC. If you live in NC, which natural disaster are you most concerned about? | NC Experiences A Lot of Natural Disasters Compared To The Rest Of The US
