National Butterfly Center is closed in response to threats from conspiracy theorists

The National Butterfly Center is struggling like a beetle with its wings wet.

The center, located in Mission, Texas, announced Wednesday that it will be closing indefinitely in response to harassment and intimidation from rightists obsessed with its location. The wildlife refuge is a favorite target of conspiracy theorists who support Steve Bannon’s ‘We Build The Wall’ campaign after the sanctuary’s executives and staff protested against the plan. Donald Trump’s construction of the border wall right through it. ONE congressional candidate MAGA longshot was caught on tape threatening park staff just days ago.

The Center’s executive director, Marianna Treviño-Wright, told HuffPo that her hand was forced by “the random terrorism that all these political organizations are trying to incite against us.”

“We regret to announce that the National Butterfly Center will be closing to the public — both members and visitors — for the foreseeable future,” wrote Dr. Jeffrey Glassberg, president of the North American Butterfly Association. and a link to a story about the threats against it.

A nearby rally organized by QAnon believers and supporters of former president Donald Trump over the weekend forced the Center to close from Friday to Monday. “We look forward to reopening soon, when the authorities and experts are helping us to solve this situation, giving us the green light,” Glassberg said.

The statement included a screenshot of a tweet from a right-wing figure at the park as an example. The tweet from Ben Bergquam, a reporter for Real America Voice, a far-right website that hosts Steve Bannon’s “War Room” podcast, said:

“I join Christie Hutcherson with the Women Who Fight for America at the National Butterfly Center in Mission TX to demand that Joe Biden stop the illegal invasion to save the butterflies! If that’s what it will be because we know the Democrats don’t care about the kids! ”
