Special edition covers for sports games have become more and more elaborate over the years in an attempt to make the distinctive boxy an attractive option along with its digital rewards. MLB The Show 22 is delving into that philosophy with exceptional artwork that not only appeals to fans who appreciate a special cover collection for display, but also appeals to Shohei Ohtani’s Japanese heritage.

MLB The Show 22’s Version MVP cover art feature this year’s cover athlete Shohei Ohtani in an anime art style that represents MLB’s greatest dual threat. The reigning American League MVP is from Japan and could go on to become one of the greatest Japanese players to ever play in MLB. This extraordinary cover adorns Ohtani in flames similar to the fireplaces he tends to throw while playing the Pitcher on the days when he doesn’t detonate the bombs that run at home into the yard as the Designated Hunter of the Los Angeles Angels.

The artwork for MLB The Show 22: MVP Version the cover was done by famous manga artist Takashi Okazaki, whose previous work includes Afro Samurai and Batman Ninja. The artwork showcases Ohtani’s strength with a baseball in one hand and a bat in the other, both of which are enveloped in flames. In double PlayStation and Xbox announcements, it was revealed that the collaboration was inspired by the long-standing fandom of Ohtani’s anime and manga. Okazaki is also a fan of Shohei Ohtani, so this collaboration seems like the perfect combination of dual admiration.

Over the years, the sports world has begun to indulge in the anime art style more and more. There have been TV commercials and promotional artwork of sporting events created in the anime/manga style as the genre reached new heights in popularity. It is likely that the people in charge of these social networking sites and others who are fans are currently running some of these departments and pitching these new ideas for promotions to the management teams.
