Murthy: ‘Deeply Concerned’ About Dangers Posed By Unvaccinated Adults

General surgeon Vivek Murthy said he is “deeply concerned” about the unvaccinated, including children, as some communities are seeing Covid-19 capacity.

In a Sunday appearance on ABC’s This week, Murthy first praised the progress the country had made in immunizing millions of Americans. He also warned that we will see some breakthrough infections in vaccinated people, but that is to be expected and does not mean the vaccine is not working.

Murthy told host Martha Raddatz: “Remember: we have vaccinated millions and millions of people in the United States. “In fact, we have over 160 million people fully immunized right now. So you’re going to see numbers, a minority, a small minority of people with breakthrough infections. “

“But here’s another thing to know,” adds Murthy, “When you are fully vaccinated, even if you have a breakthrough infection, it is more likely that the infection will be asymptomatic or mild. And it’s really good news that continues to tell us that these vaccines are highly effective, and that’s one of the reasons we recommend them to people around the country.”

Murthy then turned her attention to children under 12 who weren’t eligible for the vaccine, leaving them vulnerable to the virus. Currently, trials are underway to assess the vaccine’s effectiveness for that age group, and results are expected in the fall. An FDA official told NBC News last week that the agency could approve the vaccine for children in midwinter if the trials go well.

“I wanted to focus on the kids here because this is an important point that we don’t talk about enough,” Murthy said. “For our kids under the age of 12 — and I say as a father of two four and three-year-olds and there are no vaccines available for them yet — our kids depend on We, those around us are protected by vaccinations to protect them from the virus. And that’s why, again, vaccinations are so important to us.”

But the government is fighting an uphill battle to convince Americans they should be fully vaccinated as health misinformation spreads on social media platforms at an alarming rate. Last week, Murthy declared health misinformation a “Urgent threat.”

“I have been deeply concerned about the flow of misinformation across technology platforms and across society over the past several months,” Murthy told Raddatz.

Dr. Anthony Faucice, who heads the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, also spoke about the dangers of misinformation over the weekend, saying that if health misinformation were as prevalent in the polio era as today, Now, we will never get rid of the deadly disease.

“We could still be polio-stricken in this country if we had the kind of misinformation that is being spread now,” Fauci told Jim Acosta on CNN. “If we had that decades ago, I’m sure we would still have polio in this country.”
