Modern Warfare still has the most players in Call of Duty

With a new release every year, Call of Duty is the mainstay of the current video game market. However, not all releases are created equal and Call of DutySome of her most recent titles don’t have as many overwhelmingly positive reviews as classics like Black Ops and Modern War 2. Perhaps due to the short development time has resulted in some of the final entries in the series feeling old, but both Call of Duty: Black Ops’ Cold War and Call of Duty: Vanguard met with mixed reception upon release. Despite some interesting mechanics, most fans seem to agree that these last two games seem more like a retracement than an advancement, especially when compared to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare delivered some great quality of life upgrades along with some of the tightest shooting mechanics in any modern FPS, with some stunning graphics to boot. As such, it’s like a return to form for the franchise in a number of ways. Call of Duty: Modern War has impressed longtime fans, in fact, many still consider it the best modern entry in the series, pointing to several key aspects of the game that make it stand out.

Nostalgic, but not just for Sake

Captain Price in Call of Duty Modern Warfare

It’s no secret that established IPs make more money than new ones, even if those new IPs are excellent (like Sony’s first-party gaming line). You will often see Modern game tries to take advantage of nostalgia as much as possible to attract old fans. This can be a very good thing or a very bad thing, being exploitative or even soulless. However, there are exceptions and in case Call of Duty, NS Modern War series is one of them.

At launch, Call of Duty: Modern War there is a healthy choice of maps. There are ten maps in the base game’s core multiplayer playlist, each with their own unique environments, obstacles, and landscapes. The tactics that players use in each of these maps will change quite flexibly between play sessions. Developer Infinity Ward then offers players a bunch of free DLC maps over the course of the next two years. They provide players with some original maps, but also include some maps from earlier Call of Duty titles.

Fan favorite map like “Rust”, “Scrapyard” and “Killhouse” have been wonderfully reworked to fit Modern War engine. For most players, they haven’t seen these maps in a decade, so that initial nostalgia is a strong impression. These remake maps have been added for free, giving every player the chance to revisit the classic multiplayer maps. The visual quality of each of these maps is also impressive compared to their originals, with meticulous attention to detail going into each aspect of the arena.

However, the most interesting aspect of these remakes is how some of them play differently. With Modern Warnew mechanics, even the most veteran Call of Duty players find themselves having to adjust the old gameplay to accommodate these new versions. For some maps, the strategy remains relatively the same, such as “Rust,” which is still a battle of attrition for the central tower and various hiding spots on the ground.

However, maps like “Killhouse” have players use these new mechanics to their advantage, particularly the “Lean” mechanic, which allows players to see out from hiding. “Killhouse” has gone from a map where Akimbo Model 1887 is king, to a game of carefully darting around for cover and keeping yourself as low as possible. Regardless of personal preference or playing style, the uniqueness of Call of Duty: Modern Warmechanics of making these old maps feel new again. When Black Ops Cold War there may be some old Black Ops maps, the lack of new and unique features makes their inclusion neat, but not groundbreaking.

Possible weapon selection

Call of Duty many players have a bad habit of forcing players to use a weapon if they want any chance of killing. Looks like weekly there’s a new meta in Call of Duty: Warzone, and those who don’t keep up with the latest trends are at an inherent disadvantage.

Most, Modern War managed to avoid this unfortunate trend. With a large number of guns in each category, players have quite a few options to choose from, each of which has own pros and cons. A wide range of unlockable weapon attachments are also added to this already high level of variety. Pair this with a wide selection of secondary weapons, tactics, charisma and perks, and players will receive one of the most varied. Call of Duty game ever made. For the first time in a while, many players felt as if their custom class was all their own.

Unparalleled sound and graphic design

When it was released in 2019, Call of Duty: Modern War widely praised, among other things, for its graphics. Two years later and Modern War still looks amazing, some would argue even more so Black Ops Cold War and Vanguard.

Modern War created a realistic, distinctive style. Natural light was used, the map felt alive in it, and the environment often reacts to your actions. Weapon models are also said to be the best in the series, with individual scratches visible on the metal frame and exterior of the gun.

Sound design in Modern War also first class, one of the best sound design not only in Call of Duty , but some of the best in the industry, even winning the Game Award for Sound Design during the 2019 ceremony. Every gunfire sounds fun, every explosion sounds devastating. and the killstreak-like sound of VTOL’s low but persistent rumble gives players a sense of dread that’s core to Call of Duty multiplayer experience.

Although fans of the series can expect that the sequel will return some Call of Duty: Modern WarThe game’s best features or likely sequel, the 2019 game’s servers are still rife. There has never been a better time for players to dip their toes in the game.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.
