MLB Rumors: Bravely interested in Justin Verlander; sixth year with Atlanta, Freddie Freeman

As we count down the days until the CBA expires on December 1, we’ve got some action on the MLB rumor front. So now let’s go for a quick stroll though the sunlit meadows of scuttlebutt…

Brave on Verlander

The Braves champ may be looking to add a veteran arm to their spin, and a certain two-time winner Cy Young might be of interest:

Verlander has featured in one game over the past two seasons because of Tommy John surgery, and he is not an exact amount known as a 39-year-old is about to undergo a rehabilitation process. lengthen. All of that means, however, that Verlander will likely end up signing a short-term deal – a year or two, perhaps with a competitive option. Such a short-term commitment would be appealing to an existing team like the Braves. Notably, when Verlander played a full season most recently, in 2019, he won the AL Cy Young award.

If the combination is successful, then Verlander will join a Braves rotation that already includes Max Fried, Charlie Morton, Ian Anderson and, they hope, Mike Soroka early in the summer.

Sixth year attachment point with Freeman, brave

Freddie Freeman, the first horseman and warrior-poet of the Atlanta Braves world champion, is a freelance agent. While it was widely expected that Braves lifer would re-emerge there, that was not what was given, and there is still a significant gap in the negotiations between the two sides. More words MLB Jon Heyman of the network:

A six-year pact would lock Freeman in during his campaign at the age of 37. That will likely extend into his downfall, but that’s how these things go for the current superstars in the free agency market – you get a big yield at the front end and pay for it at the end. Freeman is still at or near the pinnacle of his skills on disc and shaping up to be a disc breaker for at least the next couple of seasons. Given that the Braves are clearly in win-now mode, Freeman is an important part for them. And that doesn’t speak to his immense popularity among his fan base. Other teams are definitely interested – including Yankees – but the conjecture remains that the Braves and Freeman have accomplished something. For now, however, nothing is certain.

Twin Beware of Buxton Trading

After a disappointing 2021 season, the Twins, who won the AL Center title in 2019 and 2020, may be looking to pivot. As part of any such change, the central controller transaction Byron Buxton, who will enter the walk year in 2022, could be very appealing to the group. However, that may not be the case, largely because Twins fans may not be in favor of it. Here’s this one by The Athletic’s Dan Hayes and Ken Rosenthal:

“Chairman Jim Pohlad, according to major league sources, is reluctant to move Buxton, knowing that such a decision would likely upset a fan base tired of seeing the team bid farewell to titles. But the Twins failed to reach an agreement on a contract extension with Buxton, their dynamic but low-injury center, who are eligible for free representation after the 2022 season. The chances of the team returning to action in their final year under the club’s control look slim without a veteran pitcher returning to the club’s rotation.”

Buxton is one of the best defensive center players in baseball and he’s an excellent base runner. Additionally, he has cultivated a strong power shot at the disc over the past few seasons. The problem with Buxton, however, is health. Only once, in 2017, has he played at least 100 games in a major season. Rise is still real and tantalizing for the soon-to-be 28-year-old, but his inability to stay healthy is undeniable. | MLB Rumors: Bravely interested in Justin Verlander; sixth year with Atlanta, Freddie Freeman
