The New York Mets late Friday night agreed terms with free agent midfielder Starling Marte on a four-year, $78 million deal, Jon Heyman report.

Marte is about to have an outstanding 2021 season for the Marlins and A, in which he defeated .310 / .383/.457 (132 OPS +) with 12 home runs and 47 stolen bases in 120 games. Entering the season, our RJ Anderson ranked Marte as Freelance agent number 10 of the period 2021-22. Here is his post:

“Marte, who turned 33 in October, has been an active player for more than a decade. He can hit average; he can be based on a polishing magnet or (increasingly) on foot; he can hit 40+ hits off the base; he can steal the base in bulk and effectively; and, yes, he can play well. off the field, especially in a corner. The only thing Marte can’t do is go back in time or make sure he doesn’t miss time breaking a bone from one of the aforementioned pitches. He easily became the best quarterback in the class.”

For his career, Marte has an OPS+ of 116 on parts of 10 MLB seasons, eight of which go to Pirates. Along the way, Marte formed an All-Star team and received a pair of Golden Gloves. Marte’s signing with the Mets is the most remarkable of the season so far and it comes just days before the current collective bargaining agreement expires and team owners could be locked out. .

With the Mets, Marte became the main center forward alongside Brandon Nimmo on the right and more recently Mark Canha on the left. Marte’s signing is also likely to signal that Michael Conforto, a free agent, will not be returning to the Mets. Marte’s addition happens the same day that the Mets also signed Canha and midfielder Eduardo Escobar.

The Mets under the new GM Billy Eppler still have the ability to add to the rotation, but they’ve added one of the most coveted names on the market.
