Mike Morhaime to female Blizzard workers: ‘I am extremely sorry that I failed you’

In response to the situation surrounding the explosive state of California lawsuit alleging systematic sexual harassment and discrimination at Activision-Blizzard, former president Mike Morhaime posted a letter to the industry and especially to his former Blizzard colleagues overnight.. The complete opposite of The combative, counterintuitive memo was privately released at Activision and the memo titled Gloria-Steinem leaked from J. Allen Brack, this letter is a factual apology expressing shame and regret for what Morhaime describes quite specifically as his own failure as the company’s former leader.

“I have read the entire complaint against Activision Blizzard and many other stories. It’s all very disturbing and hard to read. I’m embarrass. It feels like everything that I once thought I could stand on has been washed away. Worse but more important, real people have been harmed, and some women have had terrible experiences.

“I’ve been at Blizzard for 28 years. During that time, I worked very hard to create a safe and welcoming environment for people of all genders and backgrounds. I know it’s not perfect, but we’re clearly far from that goal. The fact that so many women are abused and unsupported means we let them down. Also, we haven’t been successful in making people feel safe speaking their truth. There is no consolation that other companies have faced similar challenges. I want us to be different, better.

“Harassment and discrimination exist. They are trending in our industry. Leadership is responsible for keeping all employees feeling safe, supported and treated equally, regardless of gender or background. Leadership has a responsibility to prevent malicious behavior and harassment in all its forms, at all levels of the company. To the Blizzard women who’ve been through any of these things, I’m deeply sorry to have let you down.

“I realize these are just words, but I want to acknowledge the women who have had bad experiences. I hear you, I believe you, and I’m sorry to let you down. I’d love to hear your stories, if you’re willing to share them. As a leader in our industry, I can and will use my influence to help drive positive change and combat misconduct, discrimination, and harassment anywhere. anywhere I can. I believe we can do better and I believe the game industry can be a place where women and minorities are welcome, inclusive, supported, recognized, rewarded and ultimately unhindered opportunity to make the kinds of contributions that we all produce. I want the mark I leave on this industry to be something we can all be proud of.”

Morhaime announced his departure from Blizzard in 2018 but will technically remain in an advisory role in 2019; a year ago, he founded Dreamhaven, has been attracting a lot of Blizzard talent. He wasn’t explicitly named in the lawsuit, but since even Activision’s memo acknowledges incidents more than a decade old, he’s certainly been in charge for most of the time period covered in the lawsuit. here and presided over the creation of a toxic culture and staff that created abuse.
