Microsoft Edge is creating more shade for Google Chrome

In 2001, the US government filed an antitrust lawsuit against Microsoft, alleging that they abused their monopoly power in combining the Internet Explorer browser with the Windows PC operating system. The lawsuit was finally settled and the effect of the settlement expired in 2007, but Microsoft was to be expected in terms of how strongly it has pushed its browsers against others on Windows since then. However, it seems that Microsoft is ready to restart the browser wars with a new attempt to discourage people from downloading Google Chrome.

Microsoft is said to have implemented a feature in Microsoft Edge to prevent users from downloading Google Chrome through a web browser. If Microsoft Edge users browse to the Google Chrome download site, they will receive unnecessary prompts about the browser insulting Chrome and encouraging users to stick with Edge. Microsoft Edge does not actively prevent users from downloading Google Chrome, but the prompt will try to redirect users away with misleading buttons.

Various messages can be sent to users if they visit Google Chrome download website. These messages included, “‘I hate saving money,'” no one said. Microsoft Edge? “And” Microsoft Edge runs on the same technology as Chrome, with Microsoft trust. “Shop smarter now.”

Of course, that button will redirect the user away from the Google Chrome website. But what’s particularly annoying is that there’s no clearly designated button that says “Stay” or “No thanks”. There’s a small “X” in the corner, but it’s easy to miss. The obvious purpose is to keep users on Edgeand Microsoft is willing to test what users can feel fit to do so.

As of October 2021, browser usage reports claim that Google Chrome is used by between 52.5% and 66.7% of Internet users. Edge, on the other hand, is reported to be used by between 3% and 4.6% of browsers. Microsoft clearly has room to grow, but Chrome’s Market Domination will be difficult to spend without active efforts.

For comparison, Apple’s Safari browser is similar to Microsoft’s Edge in that it is the default browser on iOS devices. Since iOS 14, however, Apple has made it relatively easy for iOS users to switch from Apple’s Safari and to Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or some other browser; certainly no prompt warning the user not to convert. MicrosoftTheir changes are bound to be controversial, as they start in 2001 in uncomfortable ways.
