Michael B. Jordan has denied rumors that he will star in JJ Abrams’ Black Superman movie, but that could be because Jordan is working on his own project for this superhero.
A project about Black Superman is being developed by Jordan and his production company, Outlier Society, according to Collider. The report states that the Outlier Society, which Jordan founded in 2016, is said to have hired a scriptwriter and is focused on exploring the Val-Zod version of Superman. The project is also being worked on to release HBO Max.
Val-Zod is Superman from Earth-2, and unlike Clark Kent, the character most fans identify as Superman, Val-Zod is portrayed as Black in the comics. Abrams’ project is said to focus on the Clark Kent version of Superman, which has been a polarizing decision for fans.
In April, Jordan said he would not be starring in Abrams’ project.
“I mean, I’m so proud that I continue to chat in these rumors to play such characters. I mean, as you know, I’ve been rumored to be playing a lot of different characters over the years. I mean, at this point, it’s flattering, I’m humbled by it. And whoever ends up stepping into that role, that’s definitely someone to look for,” Jordan said Collider.
MORE FROM THE WEB
Over the past few years, Jordan’s profile has continued to grow, especially in the action and superhero genres. With the main roles in Creed movies, as well as starring in Great quartet (2015) and Black Panther, it wouldn’t be too much of a stretch to imagine the 34-year-old playing Superman.
In an interview in April with The Hollywood Reporter while advertising Remorseless, a film in which Jordan plays a historically white character, he explains how representationalism can mean in the media.
“It’s important for people to see themselves in roles they don’t normally see,” says Jordan. “What effect does that have on the next generation, with a child or someone who didn’t think it was something they could achieve – now they’re thinking about it and daydreaming about it.”
If Michael B. Jordan ends up playing Superman, it looks like fans will be able to check out HBO Max.
