Although it was originally announced in the mid-2000s for the Nintendo DS, Metroid Dread was canceled due to technical limitations. Then the title was revealed again at Introducing Nintendo’s E3 2021, is set to be released a few months later. Although there have been rumors of a new 2D Metroid the game led to this, few could have foreseen the unexpected Metroid The game has arrived. Seeing a project that was long thought dead come back to life is both magical and exciting for longtime fans.
Unlike Super Mario Bros. or The Legend of Zelda, Metroid had a hit-or-miss track record for Nintendo. Despite a dedicated fan base and mostly positive reception for its titles, sales numbers aren’t always there for Metroid Franchising. From this perspective, Metroid Dread was a gamble for Nintendo, but the risk paid off in a big way. Best selling game Metroid title in series history, and it has also won numerous awards. Making a big hit with the right talent is proof that the other properties in Nintendo’s massive library deserve another chance.
Metroid Dread – A True Underdog Story
Much ago Metroid Entries can’t make a million sales, and indifferent reviews of certain titles hardly help. Metroid: M other and Metroid Prime: Federation Forces both underperformed, damaging the franchise’s overall reputation. Years passed between new games, and having a couple of consecutive misses seemed to be the final nail in the coffin for Samus Aran.
Combine this with the difficult development of Metroid Prime 4and everything is not searched. This is why the revival of Metroid Dread came as a welcome surprise. To bring back a game that was originally canceled in a series that was rocking was a gamble for Nintendo. Thankfully, the development was provided by MercurySteam, the same studio Metroid: Samus Returns in 2017; a safe but good remake Metroid 2: Return of Samus on Game Boy.
Metroid Dread become the best selling game in Metroid Franchising and goes on to win numerous awards, including Best Action/Adventure game at the 2021 Game Awards. This kind of success is unprecedented and the shock of a lifetime for Metroid Batch is essential. It sends a message that there is still interest in IP, something Nintendo hopes to note in due course.
More variety from Nintendo is a good thing
All that is being said, Metroid Dreadsuccess More importantly just for this series. It shows that even though the franchise may be going through a tough time, it shouldn’t be cast aside. Sony’s God of War series is another example. After receiving the incoming mixture God of War: Ascension, it took a couple of years to reinvent itself, and Kratos’ new makeover in 2018 was a huge hit with critics and gamers alike; often considered one of the best PlayStation exclusives ever made.
A new one Super Mario Games are always welcome, and Breath of the Wild 2 is one of the most anticipated games of 2022, but Nintendo can do so much more. A look at list in Super Smash Bros. shows how many IPs the company has that are not being exploited. Each of these series is geared towards a specific genre or style, so their use adds variety to the Switch’s first-party lineup.
This isn’t to say that Nintendo should just make games for the sake of it, but that’s also not to mention that there are plenty of big names gathering dust. It’s just a matter of finding the right team and vision to get these franchises back up and running, as seen with MercurySteam and its efforts on Metroid. Another notable example is Next level game was given the right to rule for Luigi’s Mansion franchise after more than a decade. It has brought success with both Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon and Luigi’s Mansion 3.
Nintendo has proven its continuing strength in this generation, for both Super Mario Odyssey and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild considered one of the best in their respective series. Would be surprised to see that extra push to submit other notable franchises like Star fox, fox and F-Zero back to the limelight. Hope that the success of Metroid Dread convince Nintendo not to be too wary of its “low-quality” franchises, and give them more room to shine.
