Editor’s note: We stopped the video before the kid was hit by the car.
MENTOR-ON-THE-LAKE, Ohio (WJW) – Mentor-on-the-Lake police are trying to identify a driver caught on video hitting a boy on a bicycle and then fleeing. scene.
Another kid just rode a bike, with a front-facing camera, in the same neighborhood and captured video of the crash and run.
The video shows the 11-year-old overtaking another bike and failing to stop at four-way stops at Beech Street and Southland Drive.
His bike was then hit by an SUV. As the boy screamed in pain on the ground, witnesses called 911 to report that the driver of the SUV did not stop and fled at high speed.
The victim was taken by lifeguards to Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital.
Police said it appeared the vehicle involved in the crash was a dark blue 2018 or 2019 Kia Sorrento, with foreign license plates, orange and blue, possibly from Florida.
Investigators say the driver has a legal obligation to stop at the scene.
“It is not clear from the video if the driver of the vehicle came to a complete stop. The child contributed to the accident by not stopping. However, in Ohio State, it is a crime to leave the scene of an accident, so we would be very interested in communicating with the driver,” said Lt John Forsythe.
Investigators said the SUV suffered damage to the front end or the passenger side corner.
In any investigation, the key question is, why did the driver decide to run away, police say?
“Is it related to drugs or alcohol, or are they not allowed to drive on the road, or are they simply scared and afraid to move forward?” Lieutenant Forsythe said.
Anyone who can help identify the driver of the SUV is asked to call Police Advisory.
Authorities said the boy suffered bumps, bruises and a road rash, but no broken bones. He is expected to be discharged from the hospital on Thursday.
