Scherzer is yet to know exactly what shirt number he will wear when he makes his debut for the national team, in the face of friends with whom he left the national team at the start of next season. The number he wears in DC and with the Dodgers, 31, belongs to Tom Seaver and is therefore unlimited. If he establishes himself as one of the Mets’ all-time greats, he’ll have to pick up a new one. The transition will take time, but Wednesday, it has already begun.
