Max Scherzer, Mets agree to record as right-hand man signs three-year, $130 million deal

Max Scherzer agree with New York Mets on a three-year, $130 million contract. CBS Sports HQ’s Jim Bowden confirmed the two sides are finalizing the deal Monday afternoon. The deal will give right-handed starters the largest average annual value of any MLB players at $43.3 million. The Dodgers (who exchanged for Scherzer by the end of July deadline), the Giants, and the Angels are also rumored to be fighting for Scherzer’s service, but it appears they are both outbid by the Mets.
Some details about Scherzer’s contract:
- Breaks Gerrit Cole’s previously held record ($36 million) for highest AAV in MLB history
- Known to include an opt-out option after the second year and a full non-trading clause
- Is the fifth largest contract in Mets history by amount guaranteed (head Francisco Lindor signed the biggest deal in club history for $341 million)
Scherzer, 37, will join his fifth team in 15 years in the majors. He came up with it Diamondbacks, was traded with Many tigers, signed as a free agent with National citizen and was traded with Dodgers previous season. During his career, he 190-97 with 3.16 ERA (134 ERA+), 1.08 WHIP and 3,020 strikes in 2,536 2/3 innings. The eight-time All-Star has won three Cy Young Awards.
Last season, Scherzer finished third in NL Cy Young’s poll (finishing sixth in the top three and eighth in the top five) as he won 15-4 with a 2.46 ERA, 0.86 WHIP and 236 wins attack versus 36 walks in 179 1/3 sets. . After the trade, the Dodgers won 11-0 from the start while he had a 1.98 ERA. In the knockout stages, he had an ERA of 2.16, even though the Dodgers lost two of his four starts.
Even at his age, the most likely path for Scherzer in 2022 is to once again swing like a trump card.
That means if the Mets get Jacob deGrom back to good health they’ll at least have two of the best pitchers in baseball in the same spin. At the very least, they have a pair of trump cards on top of the spin. The move also comes just days after the Mets stocked up alongside slot players by landing hub operators Starling Marte and utility men Mark Canha and Eduardo Escobar.
Former Marlins chairman David Samson broke Scherzer’s deal on Monday with David Samson. Listen below:
Even though the Mets lost Noah Syndergaard come Angel through free agent, Marcus Stroman is a current freelance agent and owner Steve Cohen was furious they didn’t get favorable terms Steven Matz in an attempt to reunite, they can still have a full rotation without anyone else adding now with Scherzer on board. Behind deGrom and Scherzer there will be Carlos Carrasco, Taijuan Walker, Tylor Megill and David Peterson. Left side Joey Lucchesi Tommy John had surgery at the end of June last year and could provide depth at the end of the season.
