The Matildas are desperately looking for form as they kick off their Olympics campaign against New Zealand on Wednesday night in Tokyo.
Despite being a global women’s soccer powerhouse in recent years, the Australian women’s team is still chasing its first Olympic medal when it was knocked out by Brazil in the quarterfinals in 2016.
And pooled in a tough group that includes Sweden and the United States, this is practically a must-win for the ninth-placed Matildas, led by superstar Sam Kerr.
It’s been a rough start to life under new manager Tony Gustavsson, with Australia having lost four of their past five games, including heavy defeats to Germany and the Netherlands in April. But now Now is when it’s really worth it.
“It’s been a great opportunity for us, to play in the limelight and feel it,” Gustavsson said before the opening game.
“We want to give our best when we need the best and the opening match is also one of the most important for us.
“Right now we’re just focusing on that opening game, because that’s what we need to do then after it’s over we’ll focus on Sweden and then when it’s over we focus on into America.
