Massive internet outage: FedEx, Delta and McDonald’s go down

A far-reaching internet outage on Thursday robbed a host of major corporate sites – from FedEx and Delta Airlines to HSBC and McDonald’s.

The outage coincided with reports of system outages from Akamai and Oracle – two key internet infrastructure service providers.

However, it’s unclear whether Akamai and Oracle’s issues are related to the site disruption.

Oracle said Thursday afternoon that the outage was caused by an outage of Akamai’s service.

“We are monitoring a global issue involving an Edge DNS partner that is affecting access to multiple internet resources, including Oracle cloud properties,” said Oracle.

Akamai’s Edge DNS service helps to route web browsers to their correct destination and also provides a security service.

At around 12:50 p.m. ET, Akamai said: “We have implemented a fix for this issue and based on current observations, the service is continuing to operate normally. continued monitoring to ensure that the impact has been fully mitigated.”

Among the affected websites were Fidelity, the Securities and Exchange Commission’s document search site, Airbnb, British Airways and others. Most sites were back up and up and running in less than an hour from the start of the outage.
